明德教育国际分论坛:格兰德岛学校介绍

格兰德学校 (大岛学校) 坐落在佛蒙特州格兰德岛,位于美国东北部新英格兰地区。格兰德是一个小型乡村社区,有很多农场。格兰德学校从幼儿园到八年级,共有22位教师和大概180名学生。我们学校目前工作的一部分包括实施以培养学生能力为目标的、以利用社区内各业人士为教育资源为特色的学校社区一体教育环境建设工程。这项工作与学校数学,语言,科学,历史和艺术领域的教育教学有直接相关。

作为校长,我对于学校的工作最满意的就是,实施一个“多层次辅助系统”,以帮助满足我们学生多方面学习和社交/情感需求。这项工作包括多个团队的老师和学校员工每周开会,研究学生们的数据,讨论他们的表现,根据所得信息做下一步教学指导决定。

这个过程开始于一个因素,就是有效的合作---在这样的合作中,已有组织架构已经形成,以帮助促进团队形成。为了更加细分青春期社会的/情感的/行为的组成,格兰德学校已经采用了“积极行为干预和支持”方案。

“积极行为干预和支持”是一个系统性方法,通过使用数据帮助改善我们在这个领域的实践和支持。我们学校的行为引导讲求诚实、安全、和友善。当老师和教职员工们观察到学生们的行为举止体现了这些要求时,他们及时表扬鼓励学生。当预期目标完成后,这些表扬和鼓励会持续进行,并被带到课堂上和学校的庆祝活动中予以嘉奖。

我也骄傲与我们学校与家长教师协会有紧密的合作关系。  家长教师协会由家长/社区成员组成,这些成员每个月开会讨论,并为学校日常工作和发展提供人力和财力帮助。最近,我们学校的领导团队正在吸收一名家长/社区成员为我们学校的领导团队工作,以进一步促进我们家庭和社区的支持。  

INTRODUCTION TO GRAND ISLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Grand Isle School is located in Grand Isle Vermont which can be found in the north eastern region of the United States.  Grand Isle is a small rural community with many farms.  Grand Isle School is made of up 22 teachers and about 180 students in Kindergarten through eighth grade.  Part of our current work involves implementing professional learning communities with the goal of increasing our capacity by learning from the expertise within our school community.  This work is directly related to teaching and learning specific to mathematics, language arts, science, history and the arts.       

As Principal I am most pleased about our school's work around implementing a Mutli-Tiered Systems of Supports to help meet the varied academic and social/emotional needs of our students.  This work involves teams of teachers and staff meeting weekly to look at our student's data, discuss their performance, and make decisions for instruction based on that information.  

This process begins with an element of effective collaboration where structures are in place that help facilitate the teaming procedures.  More specific to the social/emotional/behavior components of adolescence, Grand Isle School has implemented Positive Behavior interventions and Supports (PBiS).

PBiS is a systemic approach that uses data to help refine our practices and supports in this area.  Our school's guiding behavioral expectations are Honest, Safe, and Kind.  When teachers and staff observe students practicing these behaviors they are acknowledged for them.  These acknowledgements are further tracked and lead to class and school-wide celebrations once a pre-determined goal has been met.  

I am also proud of the highly engaged partnership our school has with the Parent Teacher Association(PTA).  The PTA is comprised of parent/community members who meet monthly to support our school's work through allocating personnel and monetary means to help support our school's work.  Most recently our school's leadership team has advertised for a parent/community member to serve on our school's leadership team to help further our family and community supports.
